Western Meadowlark

Western Meadowlark showed up today.  I heard his song from inside the studio, looked out the front window and there he was out on the edge of the field where we have a whole flock of Birdly Art birds.  Good hunting there amidst the Birdly Quail, Flicker, Magpie and Raven, it would seem.  He spent quite a while messing about in the grass pulling out bugs of various sizes.  Always a joy when the Meadowlark returns.

Flycatchers showed up today.  They like to to use the fence posts outside the studio to launch their aerial ambush of those early spring bugs.  A pair nest under the shed roof in the back of the studio, but it's a bit early for them to be worrying about that.

Great Horned Owl

Last night at dusk we had a Great Horned Owl settle on a tree out back behind the studio.  There was just enough light to see him clearly.  He looked around a bit, then leaned forwarded and hooted out into the evening air.  He waited, and eventually an answer came back to him from far off in the woods.  Again he hooted.  Again he was answered.  Apparently satisfied with the response, he spread his wings and flew off in the direction of the other owl.

Another big bird on the short list for Birdly Art.

Northern Harrier

A Northern Harrier stopped by for breakfast this morning.  He made several sweeps over the field, never more than 10 feet above the tall grass, and tried a couple of strikes that came up empty before he finally got his mouse.  An amazing bird with a very distinctive hunting style.  He's on the short list for Birdly Art.
